The ProjectThis database is part of the St Anthony's project. In turn, this is based on the St Anthony's visitors centre. In addition to hosting the database, the long term objective is to make the centre the principal site of research into the history of Liverpool Catholicism in general and the Irish in particular. To this end a small library is planned, containing books and other written material concerning Catholicism and the Irish. The centre will also be used for lectures on topics relating to its primary objectives.
St Anthony'sThe origins of the parish date from 1804 and the present church was opened in 1833. As Liverpool grew in size and experienced large scale Irish immigration, St Anthony's emerged as the principal Irish church in Liverpool. The foundation of St Anthony's owed much to the efforts of a French priest, Fr. Gerardot.
The DatabaseThis facility has two objectives. First it will enable members of the public to search for evidence concerning their families. Secondly, the data in the various files will enable school children to undertake project work on both Catholicism and the Irish. Initially, the databases are:
In addition to St Anthony's records, the burial records of Liverpool Parish are also available. These are pauper burials, both Protestant and Catholic. In the near future, the burial records of St Nicholas's will be added. Ultimately, all Catholic records in Liverpool will be on the databases. In addition, 1851 census data for a number of towns will be added . Initially, the records referred to above are available for the first half of the nineteenth century.
